Dr. W. Mark Saltzman is the Sterling Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology and of Chemical Engineering at Yale University, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and as Affiliated Faculty of the Yale Institute for Global Health. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University and his MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering and Medical Engineering from MIT.

Dr. Saltzman’s research has shaped the fields of drug delivery, biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering, described across more than 350 research papers and patents. Over more than 35 years leading independent research programs at Johns Hopkins, Cornell, and Yale, he introduced mathematical models for guiding the design of drug delivery systems, developed new methods for drug delivery to brain tumors, produced the first controlled delivery systems for nerve growth factors, the first delivery systems for long-term protection against STDs using antibodies, and new materials for delivery of DNA and RNA. He is also the sole author of three textbooks: Biomedical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, and Drug Delivery.

A dedicated mentor, Dr. Saltzman has served as the primary advisor for 43 doctoral students and 27 postdoctoral associates. He was the founding chair of Yale’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and from 2016 to 2022 served as Head of Jonathan Edwards College.

Dr. Saltzman is an elected member of both the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering.
