- Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Saar Gill is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine and a senior faculty member of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies. He received his MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1999, completed internal medicine residency at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and hematology training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, postdoctoral training at Stanford with Robert Negrin, and joined Penn in 2011 to work with Carl June and David Porter.
The Gill laboratory develops engineered cellular therapies for hematologic malignancies and is internationally recognized for pioneering CD33 CAR-T therapy paired with CD33-knockout hematopoietic stem cell engineering for acute myeloid leukemia — a strategy now being clinically translated. His group continues to advance next-generation cell therapies including in vivo CAR-T generation, and his approaches are increasingly relevant to the application of cell therapy in autoimmune disease.
An elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Dr. Gill co-founded Carisma Therapeutics — pioneers of CAR-macrophage therapy — and Interius Biotherapeutics, advancing in vivo cell engineering. He is a member of the Penn Colton Center for Autoimmunity, partnering broadly across academia and industry to extend cell therapy platforms into autoimmune indications.
