Dr. Ron Shamir received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and held the Sackler Chair of Bioinformatics in the Blavatnik School of Computer Science and AI at Tel Aviv University, where he has been Professor Emeritus since 2022. He founded the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics at TAU and led it for 17 years.

Dr. Shamir’s research group develops algorithms in bioinformatics for understanding the genome and human disease, with software tools in use around the world. He has published more than 330 scientific works, including 17 books and edited volumes, and has supervised more than 80 research students, 19 of whom hold academic positions.

Dr. Shamir was on the founding steering committee of RECOMB and co-founded the Israeli Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (ISBCB), serving as its president. His honors include the Landau Prize in Bioinformatics, the Kadar Family Prize for Excellence in Research, the Senior Scientist Award of the ISCB, and a Lifetime Achievement Award of the ISBCB. He is a Fellow of both the ISCB and the ACM.
