Dr. Joost Wagenaar is an Assistant Professor of Informatics in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and data lead for Penn Immune Health. He received his BS and MS in electrical engineering from the University of Twente in the Netherlands and his PhD in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Wagenaar leads the development of the Pennsieve Platform, an open scientific data infrastructure spun out of his work at Blackfynn and the NIH Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) program. Pennsieve and related platforms now serve as the data backbone for Penn Immune Health, enabling integration of clinical, multi-omic, and imaging data across diverse autoimmune cohorts and collaborator sites.

Through his leadership of immune health data infrastructure, Dr. Wagenaar partners closely with the Penn Colton Center for Autoimmunity, the Institute for Immunology and Immune Health, and the broader Colton Consortium to enable cross-institutional, FAIR-compliant data sharing. His work is foundational to Penn’s vision of data-driven precision immunology.
