Dr. Ehud Zigmond is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Tel Aviv University, and Director of the Liver Diseases Center at Sheba Medical Center. His research focuses on the immunology of autoimmune liver diseases, with particular expertise in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and the role of macrophages, monocytes, and dendritic cells in hepatic inflammation. He has made significant contributions to understanding how mononuclear phagocytes drive the pathogenesis of autoimmune cholangitis and colitis.

Dr. Zigmond has participated in major international clinical trials in PBC, including phase 3 studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Hepatology, and collaborates extensively with international research networks in hepatology, including with Prof. M. Eric Gershwin at the University of California, Davis. For the Colton Consortium, he is collaborating on the development of new mode-of-action calcineurin inhibitors for acute colitis therapeutics. He has authored over 57 peer-reviewed publications.

Developing New Mode-of-Action Calcineurin Inhibitors for Acute Colitis Therapeutics

Targeting the calcineurin-NFAT protein-protein interaction rather than enzyme active sites, this project develops a novel class of inhibitors to treat steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis with fewer side effects.
